Gotland
The largest island in Sweden, Gotland has a lot to offer to its visitors. A place full of history, nature and a unique vibe not seen anywhere else in Sweden, this is one of the most popular summer destinations in the country.
During the month of July, hordes of residents from Sweden’s capital Stockholm "invade" the island coming in the many daily ferry boats leaving from the port of Nynäshamn. On the rest of the year it is a calm and paradisiac place to its less than 60 thousand inhabitants.
The island’s capital city, Visby (sometimes spelled as Wisby) is a vibrant city with a long history. Its well-preserved medieval walls, which once protected the city’s rich merchants, now amazes the tourists. The city’s cobblestone streets lead to many historical sites, old church ruins, excellent restaurants, and a busy nightlife.
Outside the old city walls, the island has a lot of nature and tranquillity to offer. Kilometres of sand beaches, many farms where it is possible to try local ingredients, hundreds of medieval churches, old Viking sites and amazing natural rock formations (specially in the adjacent island of Fårö), all is there waiting to be seen and experienced.
I hope that these photos inspires you to visit this amazing place. And once there, do not forget to taste its unique saffron pancakes and the local beer produced at Wisby brewery.
